The Story Behind the Name

We wanted to give ourselves a name that defines the unique services we provide our clients. “Kuzuka” is a Swahili verb that means “wake up”, “emerge”, and “grow”. These actions define what we provide our corporate clients as they address issues of carbon and sustainability. We think it sounds pretty good too.

Stephen Boles, Kuzuka’s President

Steve has been active in the climate change community as a scientist and later an independent business owner for over a decade. Steve received his Masters of Science degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1998 after developing a way to detect forest fires using satellite images. He spent seven years working as a scientist at one of the world’s leading climate change research centers at the University of New Hampshire. Steve researched how changes in land cover and land use influence greenhouse gas emissions. In 2006, he began his own successful consulting firm (Environmental Geosolutions ) that uses satellite imagery to address a range of environmental issues. Steve founded Kuzuka in 2008 to be a marketplace website for the voluntary carbon offset market (www.kuzuka.com) that will bring credibility and consistency to that industry.

Steve’s work has been published dozens of times in many of the world’s leading scientific journals and popular press. He has also spoken at several conferences and workshops worldwide about the impacts of climate change and the tools that can be used to monitor and respond to those changes.
